Ramires was very much one of the star performers for Chelsea last season, with his Champions League semi-final lob against Barcelona, seemingly against all odds, to live long in the memories of Chelsea fans and neutrals alike. Despite that, some fans have started to criticize Ramires over social media forums with journalist Martin Lipton declaring that he was‘not good enough,’ despite his brilliance last year.

I have used Dembele as a means of comparison because of the fact that he has been one of the top players in defensive midfield this season, along with Mikel and Lampard, Ramires’ team-mates. It is clear that he is Chelsea’s best tackler and ball winner with his defensive stats better than Mikel’s and whilst Lampard offers a better tackle completion rate he attempts a tackle far less frequently than Ramires. Ramires is also more productive in front of goal than Mikel, who rarely ventures particularly far forward. Mikel does boast the better pass accuracy than Ramires but the majority of his passes are in defensive zones.

Tactical accommodation

Ramires best position is in a three man centre midfield where he can operate as a box to box player. He offers a good level of pace, power and drive combined with the ability to score goals, win the ball and dribble. In Chelsea’s current formation there isn’t really a role for him. He is utilized as a deep lying defensive midfielder in the clubs midfield pivot. In this role he is limited to a defensive shift, only completing 0.7 dribbles per game, whereas last season he was the clubs top dribbler with 1.4 dribbles per game. Under AVB he was utilized in a three man midfield, although the formation did shift under di Matteo.

To fit in the attacking midfield players Chelsea utilize a 4-2-3-1 unsuited to Ramires’ talents. As a result it is very impressive that he performs so well, given that he is essentially played out of position for Chelsea. Ramires is also moved wide right to play a team role for his side at times, especially in bigger ties as we might see versus Man City at the weekend.

The tactical role Ramires plays for the team

Ramires is played in a formation that does not suit him and as such performs a very good role, given his preference for a three man midfield. For Chelsea he regularly plays out of position doing a brilliant team role that masks how unbalanced the squad is. An example of this is when he plays wide right for Chelsea, as a means of tracking opposition full-backs as well as tucking in to help Chelsea’s defensive midfield pivot. Against Everton for example, a game Chelsea won 1-2 at Goodison this was evident:

Here he(no.7) is wide on the right with the aim of tracking Leighton Baines, Everton’s foremost attacking outlet. As a central midfield player, he will do a job for his side without any qualms, to the detriment of his own game. Without him playing wide right Chelsea look very narrow which leaves the full-backs incredibly exposed and also makes attacking more one-dimensional. Against Wigan he played wide right but tucked in quite a lot to help Luiz and Lampard, which further shows his tactical flexibility.

Conclusion

Ramires deserves plaudits both for his excellence and for his willingness to do a role for the team without any complaint. Failure to recognize that Ramires has been out of position all season has led to criticism of him, which in itself is unfair. Despite being played out of position; either wide right or in a defensive midfield pivot, he has been excellent, easily Chelsea’s most dynamic midfielder when played centrally. A quality performer, Chelsea would get the best out of Ramires if they re-address their centre midfield balance, which hasn’t looked quite right all season. An eventual shift back to a 3 man midfield would definitely see Ramires at his best, as an old fashioned box to box midfield player.
